Welcome to the resource site for collectors of nordic art medals.
The art medal phenomenon originally emerged in Finland, where the technology for striking deep reliefs was well developed. On December 6, 1972, Anders Nyborg, a well-known Danish publisher and artist, conceived the idea of producing small art medals of high technical and artistic quality. In his biography, Nyborg recounts that this inspiration struck during a visit to the Finnish embassy in Copenhagen, where he discovered a small exhibition showcasing commemorative medals produced by Finnish mint presses. Recognizing their artistic potential, Nyborg quickly reached out to relevant artists.
The first medal released was in collaboration with the renowned Finnish sculptor Eila Hiltunen (1922-2003), featuring a motif inspired by Greenland, then a Danish territory. Hiltunen also created another medal with designs from Iceland. Both pieces were produced by Finland's leading medal manufacturer, Kultateollisuus Ky, and issued in 1973.
The reception of these medals was positive, marking the beginning of an exciting journey
